Synopsis

This webinar presents findings from the 2021 Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (CARSS) Report, released April 25, 2022. Learning Outcomes

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe Canada’s system for surveillance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial use (AMU) for human and animal health
  • Understand the latest trends and priorities identified in national AMR and AMU surveillance findings from PHAC, and
  • Identify remaining surveillance gaps and discuss potential solutions

This webinar was delivered in English with simultaneous interpretation available in French.

The presentation is followed by a Q&A session.

Speakers

Dr. Donald Sheppard

Dr. Sheppard is the Executive Scientific Director of the Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force of the Public Health Agency of Canada and practices clinical infectious diseases and medical microbiology at the McGill University Health Centre. Dr. Sheppard’s research interests focus on elucidating the mechanisms by which biofilm-forming microorganisms cause human disease and resist antimicrobial therapy in order to develop new therapeutics for these infections.

Jayson Shurgold

Mr. Shurgold is an acting manager in the Antimicrobial Resistance Task Force of the Public Health Agency of Canada and has been a part of the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System since 2017. In collaboration with multiple partners, Jayson is currently working to help develop and promote a comprehensive, integrated AMR and AMU surveillance system at the national level through a One Health lens.

Dr. Oscar Niragira

Dr. Oscar Niragira is a physician and Senior Epidemiologist with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). He works with the Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (CARSS) team on the development of the CARSS report.

His prior experience includes work within PHAC on evidence-based clinical guidelines for sexually transmitted and bloodborne infections, and on healthcare-associated infections. Outside PHAC, Dr. Niragira has contributed to research with the Ottawa Heart Institute and the Bruyere Research Institute. Overseas, Oscar was Medical Coordinator with MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders) in several countries and has served on the Board of Directors of MSF Canada.
