2023 Theme – Pandemic Preparedness: What Does the Future Have in Store?
The National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID) offers the Boost KT: Student Knowledge Translation Award to encourage student involvement in knowledge translation and infectious diseases public health.
The theme for 2022-2023 is Pandemic Preparedness: What Does the Future Hold? The theme is intended to be broad, and can be interpreted in different ways. Examples could include:
- Infectious disease emergence due to climate and mobility patterns
- Racism, health equity and pandemics
- Antimicrobial resistance and pandemic preparedness
- Lessons learned from past pandemics (for example, COVID-19, Ebola, Poliomyelitis)
Applicants are invited to submit a project proposal outlining a unique knowledge translation approach to the topic for a public health audience. Examples include videos, infographics, interactive quizzes and meme-based information campaigns.
Successful award recipients will be invited to be part of the 2022-2023 The Boost Knowledge Translation Project, and carry out the selected proposals with the guidance of NCCID staff. The recipients can participate virtually, or in-person at the NCCID offices in Winnipeg. Any required resources for the project shall be provided by NCCID, please clearly note these in the project proposal. The participants will be credited and the completed project will be highlighted on the NCCID website.
Value
The monetary value of the award is $7,500 CAD. One undergraduate student and one graduate student will be selected for the award annually.
Eligibility
To receive the award, students must:
- be eligible to work in Canada,
- be currently enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program with broadly defined relevance to public health at an accredited Canadian university; and
- articulate a clear, achievable and creative project plan that will make a contribution to knowledge translation on the theme selected by NCCID.
Application Guidelines
The application must include the following items:
- Completed application form,
- A project plan describing: the topic (within the theme), proposed knowledge translation approach and actions, rationale, intended audience, required resources, timeline and deliverables. The project should be designed to be achievable within 4 months. (The project plan should be 750 words maximum, minimum 11 point font); and
- A letter of support from a faculty member or academic supervisor that includes confirmation of your current program of study and academic institution.
Students must return the completed application form and supporting documentation by February 12 (updated), 2023 to nccid@umanitoba.ca
Selection Process
The selection committee will include the Senior Program Manager as chair, and two staff members of the NCCID, selected by the chair. Applications will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Relevance of the proposed project to the annual theme
- Creativity/innovation in the knowledge translation approach
- Reasonable timeline and clear deliverables
- Degree of support in a letter provided by an academic supervisor
Graduate and undergraduate applications will be assessed separately.
Condition of Acceptance
Successful award recipients will complete the project they proposed under the supervision of NCCID staff. Work can be done virtually, or in-person using the NCCID offices in Winnipeg. Any required resources for the project will be provided by NCCID, but should be clearly noted in the project proposal. The work done by recipients will be credited and displayed on the NCCID website.
